Colorado weather blog: Severe weather alerts as storms roll through the plains (2024)

DENVER — Severe storms on Monday afternoon are expected to bring the possibility of flash flooding to the Denver metro area and communities along the I-25 corridor and Colorado's plains.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Boulder warned that localized areas could see up to 2 inches of rain in less than an hour.

Along with the flood threat, strong to severe storms could drop large hail and bring damaging wind gusts.

The Denver7 news team is tracking the latest Colorado severe weather alerts and conditions across the metro.

11:14 p.m. | Flash flood warning | NWS Boulder has issued a flash flood warning for Grover and Hereford until 3 a.m. Tuesday.

10:49 p.m. | Flooded roadway | CO 71 is closed in both directions between CO 94 and US 24 (Limon) due to flooding, according to CDOT. It is unclear when the roadway will reopen.

9:04 p.m. | Special weather statement | NWS Boulder has issued a special weather statement for Grover and Hereford until 9:45 p.m. The agency said there is a chance of wind gusts of 50 mph and half-inch-sized hail.

8:15 p.m. | Severe thunderstorm warning | Parts of Weld County are under a severe thunderstorm warning until 9 p.m. NWS Boulder said there is a chance of wind gusts of 60 mph and nickel-sized hail.

8:03 p.m. | Special weather statement | NWS Boulder issued a special weather statement for Brush until 8:45 p.m. The agency warned of wind gusts of 40 mph.

8 p.m. | Special weather statement | NWS Boulder issued a special weather statement for Raymer, Buckingham and Stoneham until 8:45 p.m. The agency warned of wind gusts of 40 mph.

7:59 p.m. | Special weather statement | NWS Boulder issued a special weather statement for Wellington, Livermore and Buckeye until 8:45 p.m. The agency warned of wind gusts of 50 mph and nickel-sized hail.

7:52 p.m. | Severe thunderstorm warning | NWS Boulder has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Brush until 8 p.m. The agency warned of the potential for golf ball-sized hail.

7:31 p.m. | Tornado warning continues | NWS Boulder extended a tornado warning for Lincoln County until 8 p.m.

7:19 p.m. | Severe thunderstorm warning | NWS Boulder has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Brush and surrounding areas until 8 p.m. The agency warns of a potential for golf ball-sized hail.

7:18 p.m. | Tornado warning | A tornado warning has been issued for parts of Lincoln County until 7:30 p.m.

6:32 p.m. | Tornado warning continues | East central Weld County remains under a tornado warning until 7 p.m. for a storm the NWS said was capable of producing a tornado 7 miles southeast of Pawnee Buttes. Half dollar sized hail was also possible.

6:29 p.m. | Flash flood warning | Southeastern Elbert and Central Lincoln Counties are under a flash flood warning until 9:30 p.m. The NWS said between 1.5 and 2.5 inches of rain has already fallen in the area.

6:24 p.m. | Severe thunderstorm warning | East central Lincoln County is under a severe thunderstorm warning until 6:45 p.m. for a storm near Boyero, according to the NWS. Half dollar-sized hail is possible with the storm along with wind gusts up to 60 mph.

6:05 p.m. | Tornado warning Weld County | The NWS has continued a tornado warning for northeastern Weld County on a storm 5 miles southeast of Pawnee Buttes, which is showing radar indicated rotation.

The NWS said the severe storm is capable of producing a tornado. The warning is extended until 6:30 p.m.

5:18 p.m. | Severe thunderstorm warning | A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for part of Weld County until 6 p.m. Those in the area could see two-inch-sized hail, according to the NWS Boulder. The agency said a tornado is also possible.

4:47 p.m. | Tornado warning | NWS Boulder has issued a tornado warning for part of Weld County until 5:15 p.m. There is also a potential for golf ball-sized hail.

4:20 p.m.| Severe thunderstorm warning | Northeastern Weld County is under a severe thunderstorm warning until 5 p.m. for a storm located 26 miles southwest of Kimball. The NWS said the storm could drop golf ball-size hail and wind gusts up to 60 mph.

3:55 p.m.| Half-inch hail possible | A strong thunderstorm 19 miles east of Denver, near Watkins, could carry wind gusts up to 40 mph and half-inch size hail, according to the NWS.

3:15 p.m.| Flooding threat near Denver | Radar showed storms firing south and east of the Denver area and the NWS said it was likely the higher threat of flooding could occur in the south and east sections of the Denver metro area because of the potential of urban flooding.

2:55 p.m.| Flash flood warning | The Alexander Mountain burn scar is under a flash flood warning in southeastern Larimer County until 5:45 p.m. The NWS said rainfall could reach 1 inch per hour.

2:40 p.m.| Severe thunderstorm warning | Northwestern El Paso County in east central Colorado is under a severe thunderstorm warning until 3:15 p.m. for a storm that could produce 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail, said the NWS.

2:05 p.m.| Flood watch in effect| Denver metro communities and areas along the I-25 stretching east along the plains remain under a flash flood watch until 9 p.m., where the NWS said 'ingredients are about as good as we've seen all year for potential for flash flooding."

2:00 p.m.| Flood warning in Larimer County | The NWS issued a flash flood warning for the Cameron Peak burn scar until 5 p.m. Monday. The NWS said radar indicated heavy rain over the scar — falling around .6 inches in the. last 20 minutes.
