Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2024, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Belgium ($3,160 per ton) and Ireland ($3,041 per ton), while the Czech Republic ($2,324 per ton) and Germany ($2,412 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports

Exports of household and sanitary articles of paper dropped modestly to 2.9M tons in 2024, declining by -2.5% compared with 2023. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2013 to 2024; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 when exports increased by 6.2%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 3M tons. In value terms, exports of household and sanitary articles of paper declined rapidly to $5.8B in 2024. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Germany (371K tons) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Italy (12%), Poland (9.3%), France (6.7%), Spain (5.3%), Sweden (4.7%) and Portugal (4.6%).

The Netherlands was also the fastest-growing in terms of the household and sanitary articles of paper exports, with a CAGR of +20.7% from 2013 to 2024. At the same time, Portugal (+6.9%) and Spain (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Poland and Sweden experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Italy (-2.3%), France (-2.6%) and Germany (-4.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Netherlands (+25 p.p.) and Portugal (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2013-2024, the share of France (-3.4 p.p.), Italy (-5.5 p.p.) and Germany (-9.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($1.2B), Italy ($888M) and Poland ($609M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2024, together accounting for 46% of total exports. France, the Netherlands, Sweden, Spain and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.

Portugal, with a CAGR of +9.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

In 2024, the export price in the European Union amounted to $2,031 per ton, waning by -26.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 an increase of 14%. The level of export peaked at $2,753 per ton in 2023, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2024, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($3,115 per ton), while the Netherlands ($495 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Portugal (+2.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
